Concerned Black Men of Richmond Conducts 1st 2025-2026 Session: Preparing for Success

Greetings all,

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond conducted our first activity of the 25/26 session entitled “Study Skills: Preparing for Success.”  It was held at Franklin Military Academy on September 27^th.  There were 20 mentees and 8 mentors at the activity.  We started with introductions and went over the purpose of developing good study habits and why they’re important.

Fred Wright went over the CBM Grade Challenge where they were given steps to advocate for themselves to increase their grades when necessary.  There was a discussion on each step and the mentees went over their way of doing each of them.  

Next, we took a break before lunch to challenge the mentees to a manual dexterity exercise.  They were required to pick up 5 pens one at a time and set them down the same way.  They found out quickly that it was harder than it appeared but most were successful.

After lunch, we presented the mentees to another challenge where they asked to race each other picking up tumblers and stacking them starting from the same start line, but picking them up in reverse order.  This was a good way for them to work off some of that pizza that was served and they really enjoyed it!  See it on Instagram @cbmrichmond.

We wrapped up the activity with a survey from them inquiring about how much time they spend on homework, how they prepare for testing and the amount of sleep they are getting nightly.

The Concerned Black Men of RVA are pleased to see the number of mentees that returned for this session!  We are looking forward working with each of these young men and are confident that they will achieve great things in the future!  Thanks, to each of you for your interest and contributions to our organization.  It means the world to our youth and the communities we serve.

Concerned Black Men of Richmond Conducts 1st 2024-2025 Session at the Franklin Military Academy

Greetings all!

The Concerned Black Men of RVA held the 1^st in-person activity of the 24-25 session entitled “Civics: The Rights and Duties of Citizenship.” It was conducted at Franklin Military Academy on Saturday October 19^th.  There were 19 youths in attendance.

We started the activity by getting each mentee to stand and introduce themselves speaking clearly and with confidence.  Next there was a discussion on what civic engagement is and had those with experience to elaborate on how and why they got involved.  They were informed that CBM is an example of civic engagement and we talked about why we do what we do.

The mentees were very attentive as we discussed the upcoming election and viewed a brief video on the electoral college.  The pros and cons of the electoral college were debated after the video.

Next, we had Michael Taylor, a local licensed commercial drone pilot explain what drones are and the various types and uses of UAV’s (unmanned aerial vehicles).

The boys were very engaged and after the presentation they got to take turns flying drones provided by Mr. Taylor and Principal Hudson of Franklin Military Academy.

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond are working diligently to provide impactful activities that motivate the young men to do their best in all of their endeavors.

Concerned Black Men of Richmond Addresses The Dangers of Drug Use with Youth at Franklin Military Academy

Greetings all.

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond conducted our 2nd activity of this session on November 18th at Franklin Military Academy.

Due to a recent incident where 4 RVA high school students were hospitalized after ingesting edibles, “The Dangers of Drug Use” was the topic of discussion. It was led by William Nelson, a MCV employee as well as a RVA policeman. Mr. Nelson offered a unique perspective in that he has extensive knowledge of both the medical and legal ramifications of drug use.

There were 14 very attentive young men that attended the activity. They were given detailed information on the various types of drugs, legal as well as recreational types and their effects. It was a lively discussion because of the nature of the subject.

We also took the time to go over the “CBM Grade Challenge.” This is a step-by-step proven strategy on how to be an advocate to bring a grade up in a specific subject.  One of the veteran mentees shared his experience in implementing the steps to improve his grade last year.

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond are working diligently to provide impactful activities that motivate the young men to do their best in all of their endeavors. We are building our program back to a per-pandemic level.
