Concerned Black Men of Richmond and Youth visit the Black History Museum

Greetings,

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond recognized “Black History Month” by visiting the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia.  We toured the museum on Saturday February 17^th with 12 youth and 9 mentors.

There were 2 floors filled with examples of black men, women and children from Virginia that changed our country as well as the world.  The tour was conducted by Mary C. Lauderdale, the Visitor Services Manager.  She is very passionate and knowledgeable about each exhibit at the center.

There were a number of interactive displays that were fun as well as educational.  The tour lasted roughly an hour and the boys were very engaged.

Ms. Lauderdale shared a very interesting story regarding Arthur Ashe.  She explained how England sent a delgation to Richmond to see what we were doing to commemorate the Silver Anniversary of Mr. Ashe’s Wimbledon victory and that nothing was being done!  She took time to share anecdotes at each of the displays and captured the attention of everyone.

 

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond strive each month to stimulate the imaginations and aspirations of our youth through activities such as this.  Thanks to caring people in the community and beyond such as yourselves, we continue show our mentees that their possibilities truly are limitless. Again, thank you for your support.  It means the world to the Concerned Black Men of Richmond and the youth we serve.

Concerned Black Men of Richmond holds ‘Improve Your Speaking’ activity at Franklin Miltary Academy

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond VA  are excited to kick off 2018!  We started with our “Improve Your Speaking” activity at Franklin Military Academy.  The activity was coordinated by Mark Robinson with the RVA chapter of the “Toastmasters”.  There were 11 mentees and 8 mentors in attendance. 

Stacy Taylor of the Richmond Toastmasters started the event with a review of some accepted techniques for proper public speaking. 

Next, Mark Robinson elaborated on “LPR”, (listen, pause and respond); a technique for answering questions.

After a brief discussion, the mentees were required to draw a question from a bag and use the “LPR” technique to answer the question.  They were required to have an introduction, 3 points and a conclusion.  We started with volunteers and then called on each of the rest to apply what we discussed.

Each of the mentees met the requirements and most answered their first selection pulled from the bag!

Not to be out done, the mentors demonstrated their speaking prowess as well.  It was a great experience for all!

 

Each month the Concerned Black Men of Richmond VA attempts to provide the youth corp with activities that will enhance their development into productive citizens.  We thank you for your contributions to our organization and trust that each of you knows how much it is appreciated!

Concerned Black Men of Richmond and Youth Tour the VA State Capitol

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond took a tour of the VA State Capitol on November 18^th. The tour was coordinated through the office of Delegate Jennifer McClellan.

We started with a tour of the capitol grounds.   There are many monuments on the grounds that our youth corps had never seen such as the Washington Equestrian Monument, the General Thomas J. Jackson statue and the Civil Rights Memorial.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next we entered the underground extension on Bank St and were met by our tour guide Mr. Swisher. He has extensive knowledge of the history of the capitol as well as US History. We saw many statues, paintings and sculptures throughout the capitol.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The guided portion of the tour ended in the General Assembly.  Mr. Swisher demonstrated how votes are cast from the desks, the qualifications and various roles that pages play.  The youth were then allowed to take the seats at the podium.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next we went to the 3^rd floor and viewed the portraits of each governor of Virginia. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We left the capitol grounds and visited the Maggie Walker and Bill Bojangles Robinson statues.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The boys were well behaved and asked many questions throughout the day!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The boys had a great time and actually learned a few things! Thank each of you for your support and interest in the Concerned Black Men of Richmond.  We will continue in “Caring for our Youth”.
