Concerned Black Men of Richmond participates in the 12th Annual Unity Ride For Sickle Cell

Greetings!

On Saturday May 1, 2021, the Concerned Black Men of Richmond assisted The Ladies of Elegance, Inc. with the 12^th Annual Unity Ride For Sickle Cell.  It was a great opportunity for us to get back out into the community.

More than 4000 people in Virginia suffer from Sickle Cell Disease.  Of this total, nearly 900 of them are in the Richmond service area.  Approximately 155,000 have the Sickle Cell Trait and almost 4000 are in our service area.  The purpose of the ride is to raise funds for the MCV Foundation & Florence Neal Cooper Professorship.

There were hundreds of motorcycles of all types, 2 wheeled, 3 wheeled, sidecars and trailers!  The riders were women and men of all ages.

We met at the Steel Horse Harley Davidson Motorcycle Shop where we assisted with set up and registration of the participants.  After acknowledgements and prayer, the riders headed to Pop’s Bar and Grill for refreshments.

Thanks to each of you for your support of the Concerned Black Men of RVA!  We are looking forward to continuing our work in the community as the concern over the pandemic subsides.  We are looking forward to working with our youth in person in the near future.

Concerned Black Men of Richmond Attends 31st Annual 2nd Street Festival & Holds Music Activity with Youth & Grammy Award Winning Composer Lamont Fleming

Greetings all!

Last month the Concerned Black Men of Richmond began the month at the 2^nd Street Festival on October 5^th & 6^th in historic Jackson Ward. This is a celebration of African American Art & Culture that has taken place for 31 years.  We manned our table on community row and met with politicians, former mentors and the community at large to tell how we are continuing to impact the youth in the Richmond area.

This is always a great opportunity for the Concerned Black Men of Richmond to recruit new mentors and mentees for our organization!

Next, we had our first youth activity, “Music – Inside Look” on Saturday October 12^th. The event was conducted by Lamont Fleming, a Grammy Award winning composer who has worked with artists such as Chris Brown and Destiny’s Child.

Lamont and Markel Bealle prerecorded a music track and worked with the youth on developing a hook and other facets of song composition for them to put together. 

 

 

They had a great time putting the song together and actually completed the first verse (a rap) and the hook!  Lamont did a great job encouraging the boys to pursue their dreams and to strive for excellence in all their endeavors. 

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond really appreciates the time and effort that Lamont and Markel put into putting on this event. We hope that we can get together again to possibly finish the song. It warms our hearts to see men of that stature give their time and share their talents with other young men!

Concerned Black Men of Richmond Attends 30th Annual 2nd Street Festival

October 16, 2018

 

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond started the session off by attending the 30^th Annual 2^nd St Festival in Historic Jackson Ward October 6^th & 7th.  We manned our usual booth next to the voter registration booth on Community Row.  There was a lot of interest shown in our organization and a couple of former members stopped by as well.  A few prominent politicians visited our booth and it was nice to thank Senator Jennifer McClellan in person for her assistance with the Capitol Tour that we went on last session.  There was a lot of interest shown by parents many expressed their appreciation for what we are doing in the community.

 

 

 

The 2^nd Street Festival has provided The Concerned Black Men of Richmond with excellent exposure for a number of years and we hope the relationship will continue for years to come.
