Concerned Black Men of Richmond Attends 31st Annual 2nd Street Festival & Holds Music Activity with Youth & Grammy Award Winning Composer Lamont Fleming

Greetings all!

Last month the Concerned Black Men of Richmond began the month at the 2^nd Street Festival on October 5^th & 6^th in historic Jackson Ward. This is a celebration of African American Art & Culture that has taken place for 31 years.  We manned our table on community row and met with politicians, former mentors and the community at large to tell how we are continuing to impact the youth in the Richmond area.

This is always a great opportunity for the Concerned Black Men of Richmond to recruit new mentors and mentees for our organization!

Next, we had our first youth activity, “Music – Inside Look” on Saturday October 12^th. The event was conducted by Lamont Fleming, a Grammy Award winning composer who has worked with artists such as Chris Brown and Destiny’s Child.

Lamont and Markel Bealle prerecorded a music track and worked with the youth on developing a hook and other facets of song composition for them to put together. 

 

 

They had a great time putting the song together and actually completed the first verse (a rap) and the hook!  Lamont did a great job encouraging the boys to pursue their dreams and to strive for excellence in all their endeavors. 

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond really appreciates the time and effort that Lamont and Markel put into putting on this event. We hope that we can get together again to possibly finish the song. It warms our hearts to see men of that stature give their time and share their talents with other young men!

Concerned Black Men of Richmond Held 2019-2020 Orientation Meeting at Franklin Military Academy

Greetings all!

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond started the 2019/20 session with an orientation meeting on September 14^th at Franklin Military Academy.  The history of the organization was given along with an introduction of the mentors in attendance.  We provided the parents and guardians with a summary of last year’s activities and a calendar for this session.  The mentees then introduced themselves and reviewed the code of conduct for the mentees. 

Last March, the Concerned Black Men of Richmond conducted a “Baseball Fundamentals” clinic with The Metropolitan Junior Baseball League.  They have a relationship with a baseball team in the Bahamas that was severely impacted by Hurricane Dorian and were conducting a supply drive at The Diamond on Arthur Ashe Boulevard.  We reached out to Coach Husband and asked for a list of the supplies that they were requesting.  The Concerned Black Men of Richmond donated several cases of peanut butter to assist them in their relief effort.   

We have some very exciting activities planned for the youth this session!  Thank each of you for your interest and support of the Concerned Black Men of Richmond.  You are making a difference in the lives of the youth that we serve and the community.

Concerned Black Men of Richmond holds End of Year Cookout for Youth at Robinson’s Park

Greetings all!

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond concluded our 2018/19 session with an end of year cookout.  The activity was held on June 15^th at Robinson’s Park in eastern Henrico.  There were numerous parents, donors, former and current mentees in attendance.  The boys always enjoy the opportunity to show off their athletic prowess on the basketball court and playground.

 

They have really bonded well with each other by the end of the session get along great!

We started the event by giving a summary of the activities that the Concerned Black Men provided this session. 

 

Next we highlighted the mentees achievements academically as well as extracurricular participation throughout the school year.

The mentees have really represented themselves well this year and were presented with a little cash from us as encouragement to continue to pursue excellence in all their endeavors.

The food was catered by Buzz & Ned’s Real Barbeque and was enjoyed by all.   

Allyson Dyche was there putting together a piece to be aired on NPR radio in the near future. We will keep you all posted as to the air date and time.

It is always good to get together with the parents to get their feedback on how the Concerned Black Men of RVA are impacting the mentees and to thank them for the opportunity to serve their loved ones.

The Concerned Black Men of RVA would like to thank each of you also for your interest and patronage of our organization.  You were instrumental in achieving our goals for the 2018-19 session.     We hope that you continue to support our efforts in the upcoming session and let others know about the great things that the Concerned Black Men of RVA are doing!

Concerned Black Men of Richmond Holds Social Etiquette Class for Youth

Greetings all,

The Concerned Black Men of RVA held our “Social Etiquette: Doing it with class” activity on Saturday, May 25^th.  As in the past, it was held at Ristorante La Grotta, a world class fine dining establishment in downtown Richmond.  The event was well attended even though we had to make a schedule change.  Everyone was on time, well dressed and had a great experience putting into practice what we covered earlier in the program.

 The food and staff were great as usual and most of the boys knew what to expect.   They were presented with a four course meal with a choice of entrées consisting of Salmon topped with shrimp, Veal Scaloppini and Filet of Chicken.  For dessert there was cheesecake or chocolate ice cream.

 

This event is a very important facet of our mission in exposing our youth to diverse cultures and enhancing life skills.

We presented Tony and Andrea Capece with a token of our appreciation for their continued support of the Concerned Back Men of RVA! They are truly special friends and their generosity is greatly impacting young men that we serve.

We would like to thank each of you for your patronage and interest in our organization as we come to the close of our program this year!  Your support enabled us to take the boys to Monticello, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and to the IMAX Theatre in the Science Museum!  The Concerned Black Men of RVA are looking forward to doing greater things next year and we hope that you will spread the word and continue to give assistance to us as we serve our youth.

Concerned Black Men of Richmond conducts Part 1 of Etiquette Essentials with Youth

May 8, 2019

 

Greetings all,

The Concerned Black Men of RVA conducted the “Etiquette Essentials” activity on Saturday, April 13.  It was conducted in the conference room of the 21 Building where our office is located and was well attended by the youth as well as mentors.  We started by going over what is expected of them while attending the fine dining activity at Ristorante La Grotta this month.  Most of the mentees in attendance have participated in the activity in the past and we asked them to share their past experience with the group.  Each of them had a different perspective and was able to expound on the importance of conducting themselves properly in a fine dining establishment.

 

This year we added a trip to the Science Museum of Virginia to see a movie in the Dome Theatre entitled “Wild Africa”.  This was a first time seeing an IMAX movie for a couple of the mentees and they really enjoyed the experience.

Everyone had a great time during this activity and was very well behaved!

The Concerned Black Men of RVA cannot thank you all enough for your interest and support of our organization.  We strive to engage the mentees in activity that enhance their life skills and increases their intellectual curiosity.  Your support ensures that money will not be an impediment to our mission in caring for our youth.  By impacting the young men we impact the community and by impacting the community we impact the world.
